A greedy couple, delighted when borrowed items mysteriously “give birth” to smaller versions, learn a harsh lesson when their valuable golden plate “dies” while borrowed, proving that dishonesty and excessive greed ultimately lead to loss and humiliation.

Too much desire is bad

Hello friends, today I will tell you a story about a greedy husband and wife. Listen.

There was a couple in a village who were very greedy. They had a lot of money, but never helped anyone, not even with a raised hand.

In the same village, right next to their house, lived another husband and wife. One day, this neighboring couple needed a container. So, they went to the greedy couple’s house and requested them politely, “We really need a container today. If you could kindly lend us one, it would be very helpful.

The greedy couple didn’t really want to lend it, but after much pleading, they reluctantly agreed. They picked up an old container lying around their house and gave it to their neighbors.

The neighbors were very happy and went back home with the container. A few days passed. Three days later, the neighbors came back and returned the container. They said, “Something strange happened at our home.”

The greedy couple asked, “What happened?”

The neighbors replied, “Your container gave birth to a baby container at our home. Look!” And along with the original container, they handed them a small container, saying, “Your container gave birth to this one.”

The greedy husband and wife were overjoyed. They thought to themselves, “These two must be crazy. How can a container give birth?” But they were happy because they were getting more. So they took both containers and said, “Yes, yes, our container was pregnant. It gave birth at your place. Thank you for returning both.”

A few days later, the same neighbors returned and asked, “We need a small silver pot (kalash) for a ritual. If you have one, could you lend it to us? We will return it.”

The greedy couple had a small silver pot. They thought, “Let’s give it. These people always return things with an extra one.” So they gave them the pot.

After a few days, the neighbors came back with the same silver pot and a tiny silver pot along with it. They said, “Once again, a strange thing happened. Your silver pot gave birth to this small one at our home.”

The greedy couple were thrilled. They thought, “These neighbors are fools! Don’t even know lifeless things can’t give birth. But every time they return more than we gave—so who cares?” They happily accepted the small pot and said, “Thank you for giving us our pot’s baby!”

More days passed. One day, the neighbors had a religious ceremony and needed a large plate. They came to the greedy couple’s house and asked, “We need a large plate. Do you have one we could borrow?”

The greedy couple thought, “Let’s give them our gold plate. Surely this time too they’ll return it with a bonus.” So they gave them a large gold plate.

Days passed, but the neighbors didn’t return the plate. The greedy couple got worried. They finally went to the neighbors and asked, “Where is our plate?”

The neighbors replied, “We are very sorry, but your plate passed away last night. It died, and we cremated it.”

The greedy couple were shocked. “What do you mean our plate died?”

The neighbors said, “Yes, it passed away. We’re telling the truth.”

Furious, the greedy couple called the villagers together and shouted, “These people are not returning our plate!”

The village chief asked the neighbors, “Why didn’t you return the plate?”

The neighbors explained the entire situation—how they had returned the container and the pot along with their ‘babies’. “Just like that, this time the plate died,” they said.

The village chief laughed and said, “Well, if your lifeless container and pot can give birth, then your lifeless plate can also die. You may leave now.”

Thus, the greedy couple received the perfect reward for their greed. They went home with their heads hung in shame.

Moral of the Story:
You cannot gain without effort, and excessive greed will always lead to loss.
