A father teaches his constantly bickering five sons a valuable lesson about unity: individually, single sticks are easily broken, but when bound together, they are unbreakable. This demonstrates that there is strength in togetherness, and unity ensures protection and resilience.

There is strength in unity

Hello friends, today I will tell you a story about a father and his sons.

There was a village where an old father lived. He had five sons. The five sons did not get along with each other. They would constantly fight and argue.

One day, while the old father was watching his sons fighting again, he felt very sad. He thought, “If this is the situation while I am still alive, what will happen to my family after I am gone? These children will never live together. If they keep fighting like this, I don’t know what will become of my family.”

He kept thinking about this day and night. Then, one day, he came up with an idea and called all five sons to him.

When the sons gathered and asked, “Father, did you want something from us?”, the father pointed to a pile of wooden sticks lying nearby and said, “Each of you pick up one stick.”

Each son picked up a stick.

The father then said, “Now break them.”

All five sons easily snapped the sticks in one go.

Then the father said, “Now pick up two sticks each.”

They picked up two sticks, and though it was a bit harder, they still broke them.

Next, the father said, “Pick up three sticks and break them.”

They picked up three sticks and, with some effort, managed to break those as well.

Finally, the father tied seven or eight sticks together with a rope, gave the bundle to the eldest son, and said, “Now try to break this bundle together.”

The eldest son couldn’t do it. The second son tried — he failed too. None of them could break the bundle.

The father then said, “Did you see this?”

The sons replied, “What’s so great about this? When the sticks are tied together like this, how can they break?”

The father smiled and said, “Exactly — that’s the essence of life. My sons, if you stay united, no outsider will be able to break you. But if you keep fighting and live separately, anyone will easily break you.”

“That’s why elders always say, ‘There is strength in unity.’”
