A farmer bought a well from his neighbor but was then denied access to the water within it, as the neighbor claimed he only sold the well, not the water. The village head, a wise man, resolved the dispute by telling the neighbor to either remove his water or pay rent for the well, leading the neighbor to apologize and allow the farmer to use the water.
A farmer's story
Hello friends, today I will tell you a farmer’s story. A farmer lived in a village. He had a field, but there was a severe shortage of water for irrigation in that field. So, after thinking, he asked a neighboring farmer if he could sell his well so that he could use it for irrigation. The farmer said, “Yes, why not? I will sell you my well”.
The farmer collected money and bought the well. When it was time for irrigation, and the farmer went to draw water from it, the neighbor came and asked him, “What are you doing?”. The farmer replied, “I need to irrigate now, and I need water”. Then the neighbor said, “You cannot take its water”. So the farmer asked, “Why can’t I take it? I bought this well”. The neighbor said, “Yes, you bought the well, but the water inside it is mine, isn’t it?”. “The well is yours, but the water is mine”. The farmer thought, “What should I do now?”. Water is very essential for irrigation.
So he went to the village head and narrated his entire plight to the head. The head was a very wise man. He came to the field with the farmer and said, “Go now and draw water”. When the farmer went to draw water, the neighbor came running and said, “I told you not to take its water, didn’t I?”. Then the head asked, “How can you forbid him?”. The neighbor told the head, “I only sold him the well, not the water, so how can he use my water?”. Then the head said to him, “Oh, is that so? Then you either take all your water out of this well and take it somewhere else, or pay rent for this well”.
Hearing this, the neighbor was stunned. He thought, “Where can I go with all this water, and I can’t pay its rent either”. Then, realizing his mistake, the neighbor apologized to the head and the farmer and gave permission to use the water.
