Two cats fighting over a piece of bread ask a passing monkey to help them divide it. The clever monkey eats the entire loaf under the pretense of making the portions equal, teaching the cats that when two people argue, a third party benefits.
The Story of the Monkey and the Two Cats
Hello friends, today I’ll tell you a story about a monkey and two cats.
In a village, there lived a monkey who was very hungry. He had been hungry since the morning but couldn’t find anything to eat. He set off in search of food. In that same village, a pair of cats lived. They were very good friends. When they found a piece of bread on the road, they began to fight over it. “This bread is mine!” one cat said. “No, it’s mine!” said the other.
Just then, the monkey passed by. He came to the cats and asked, “Why are you two fighting so much?”
One cat said, “This bread is mine, so I’ll eat it.” But the other cat said, “No, it’s mine, and I will eat it.”
The monkey said, “What’s there to fight about? Just divide it in half and eat it.” The cats asked the monkey, “How should we divide it in half?” The monkey replied, “I’ll help you both.”
The monkey broke the bread into two pieces. When he did, he saw that one piece was larger. So he broke off a small piece from the bigger one, put it in his mouth, and said, “Now look.” At that moment, the other piece looked bigger. So the monkey broke off a piece of that one and put it in his mouth. In this way, he kept breaking off pieces to make them equal until he had eaten the entire piece of bread.
When the bread was completely gone, the monkey said, “While trying to divide this into two equal parts, the whole bread is gone.” The monkey began to walk away. The cats were angry. They yelled, “You ate our bread!” and started chasing after him. But the monkey climbed a tree and jumped away, and the two cats were left with nothing.
The cats felt terrible. They thought, “If we had just shared it ourselves, we would have at least gotten a small piece. But now we have nothing.”
So, what do we learn from this story? When two people fight, a third person often takes advantage of the situation. This is why elders say that in a fight, only a third party benefits. Therefore, we should not fight but should share and live in harmony.
I hope you liked this story. Namaste.
