A grieving woman begs Gautama Buddha to revive her dead child. He tells her to fetch mustard seeds from a house where no one has died, making her realize the universal truth of death and helping her find peace.

Gautama Buddha and a Woman

Hello friends, today I’ll tell you a story about Gautama Buddha.

Once, when Buddha was sitting in deep meditation, a woman came running toward him, holding her child. She placed the child’s body at Buddha’s feet and said, “Lord, this is my only son, and he has died. I beg you, please bring him back to life. I have heard you are a wise man, an avatar of Vishnu. Please prove your truthfulness and save my child.”

Buddha, in a very gentle voice, said to the mother, “Go and bring me a handful of mustard seeds. But there is one condition: the seeds must come from a house where no one has ever died.”

The woman immediately left and ran from house to house, asking for a handful of mustard seeds. Each time someone was about to give her the seeds, she would ask, “Has anyone in your home ever died?” And each time, the person would reply, “Yes, my mother, my brother, or someone else has died here.” The woman returned from every house disappointed.

By evening, she finally understood the truth: there is no house where death has not occurred. She realized that death is an unchangeable truth that no one can stop. With this understanding, she performed the last rites for her child. In a calm state of mind, she returned to Buddha.

She fell at his feet and said, “Today, I understand that true peace of mind doesn’t come from turning your back on the truth. We must face it directly and deal with it.” She bowed to his feet and remained his devoted disciple for the rest of her life.

I hope you liked this story. We’ll meet again with another story. Namaste.
