Two brothers divide their inheritance, with the clever older brother taking the fruit-bearing top of a mango tree while giving the bottom to his sibling. The younger brother, however, foils his plan by threatening to chop down the tree’s base, making the older brother realize his mistake and apologize.
The Mango Tree
Hello friends, today I’ll tell you a story about two brothers.
A man lived in a small village with his two sons, whom he loved very much. The man didn’t own much; his only possessions were an old house and a big mango tree next to it. As time passed, the man grew old, and when his time came, he called his sons to his side. “Children,” he said, “all I have to leave you is this house and this tree. Share them equally between yourselves and be happy.” A few days later, the father passed away.
After their father’s death, the brothers decided to divide the house and the tree. The older brother said, “Look, little brother, the upper part of the house is yours, and the lower part is mine.” He then took his brother to the tree and said, “It’s the same with this tree. The lower part is yours, and the upper part is mine.” The younger brother was happy. He wasn’t as clever as his brother and didn’t realize the trick, so he agreed. He moved into the upper part of the house with his wife.
The younger brother took great care of the tree. He always made sure to add fertilizer to his part and checked for ants. He watered it with great affection. Days passed, and the tree began to grow many flowers, which then turned into many mangoes. Seeing the fruit, he felt a great sense of satisfaction; his hard work had paid off.
When the mangoes were ready to ripen, he asked his older brother, “Brother, how many of these mangoes will be mine?”
The older brother scolded him. “Your share? I’ve already given you your share!”
“You’ve already given me my share?” the younger brother asked.
“Yes, of course,” the older brother said. “The lower part of the tree is yours, right? So whatever grows on that part is yours. The top part is mine, so whatever grows on top is mine. Not a single mango is yours.” The younger brother felt very bad. He went home and told his wife about his brother’s deception. His wife then came up with a plan.
The next day, as the older brother was about to leave the house, he saw his younger brother standing with a large knife, striking the tree. “Why are you damaging the tree?” the older brother asked. “Why are you trying to cut it?”
The younger brother replied, “Why do you care? I’m damaging my part of the tree, aren’t I? I’m hurting the lower part. How does that affect you?”
The older brother said, “If you cut the lower part, how will the nutrients reach the top part? How will the mangoes ripen? They’ll all be ruined!”
The younger brother replied, “That’s your problem, not mine. I can do whatever I want with my share.”
The older brother finally understood that his younger brother was trying to teach him a lesson. He apologized and said, “What I did was wrong. Please forgive me.”
The moral of this story is that taking another’s share for yourself is a very bad thing to do.
