The Merchant's Downfall and Rise
Hello friends, today I’ll tell you a story about a merchant named Vardhaman.
Vardhaman was a very clever and wealthy merchant, and the king of the village was his closest friend. The king trusted him so much that he never made a decision without Vardhaman’s advice. As years passed, Vardhaman’s daughter came of age and her wedding was arranged. Vardhaman invited everyone to the ceremony, but he forgot to invite one servant. Despite not being invited, the servant showed up and sat in a place reserved for royalty. Seeing this, Vardhaman became furious. He went to the servant and scolded him badly.
“Who do you think you are, sitting among the royal guests?” Vardhaman yelled. “You are a servant. You should know your place and sit with the other servants, not with the royal guests.” After scolding him, he called his other servants and had the man thrown out of the ceremony.
The servant was filled with anger and vowed to get his revenge on the merchant. One day, while he was sweeping the floor in the king’s chamber, he saw that the king was asleep. He approached the king’s bed and whispered as if to himself, “Today, I saw the merchant in the queen’s chamber.” The king, who was only half-asleep, heard this and immediately sat up. He asked the servant, “Did you really see the merchant in the queen’s chamber?”
The servant pretended to be confused. “Your Majesty, what are you talking about? I don’t know.” The king insisted, “But you just said you saw the merchant in the queen’s chamber!”
The servant replied, “Your Majesty, I was gambling all night, and I didn’t get any sleep. I don’t know what I’m babbling about. Please don’t pay any attention to what I say. Just forget about it.” The servant then left, but not before planting a seed of doubt in the king’s mind.
The next day, when the merchant came to the palace, the king told his guards not to let him in. The guards stopped the merchant at the door and told him, “You cannot enter. Please leave.” The merchant was confused and didn’t understand why he was being sent away. Just then, the servant appeared and said to the guards, “Hey, soldiers, you’re telling him to leave? Don’t you know who he is? He is a very powerful man. He can send anyone away or have them thrown out.” Saying this, the servant walked away. The merchant finally understood that the servant was getting his revenge for being thrown out of the wedding ceremony.
The next day, the merchant invited the servant to his house, treated him with great respect, and apologized for what he had done. The servant said, “It’s alright. I have forgotten about it. I will restore your friendship with the king.”
Later that same day, while he was sweeping the king’s chamber, he went near the king and whispered, “I saw the king eating food in the bathroom today.” The king, startled, sat up and asked, “When was I eating in the bathroom?”
The servant said, “Your Majesty, what are you talking about? I didn’t get any sleep because I was gambling all night, so I don’t know what I’m blabbering about.” The king then realized that the servant was just babbling nonsense. He remembered how he had banished the merchant from his kingdom because of the servant’s words. He immediately called the merchant back to his palace.
The moral of this story is that we should never disrespect anyone, whether they are great or small.
