The Sage and The Coin
Hello friends, today I’ll tell you a story about a sage.
A sage lived in a village. He spent most of his time in the temple, engrossed in meditation and prayer. Whenever he left the village, he would go to beg for alms, and he was content with whatever he received. He had no need for money and no desire to accumulate it.
One day, while the sage was out begging for alms, he found a silver coin on the side of the road. He picked it up and thought he would give it to someone in need. He put it in his bag and continued on his way. He talked to many people, and he saw that they were all happy and content with their lives. He realized that none of these people needed the coin. He searched the entire village but couldn’t find a single person who needed money or had a craving to get more. In the evening, he returned and sat on the steps of the temple. After eating the food he had received as alms, he sat down to meditate.
At night, when it was dark, the king was on his way to attack a neighboring kingdom with his army. Seeing the sage sitting on the steps, the king came down and touched his feet to ask for a blessing. The king felt so good about the blessing that he asked, “Baba, please give me your blessing.” The sage blessed him and asked, “Where are you going at this hour?”
The king told him, “I am going to attack a neighboring kingdom.” The sage asked, “Why are you attacking the neighboring kingdom?”
The king said, “If I win the neighboring kingdom, my kingdom will become bigger and more vast.” The sage said, “Ah, so you want to expand your kingdom? Then I have something for you.” The sage took out the silver coin from his bag and placed it in the king’s hand. The king was surprised to see the silver coin and asked, “Why are you giving me this coin?”
The sage replied, “Since morning, I have been looking for a needy person who is not content with what they have. In the entire kingdom, you are the only one I found who craves for more. So I thought this coin would be useful to you.”
The king then realized he was about to do something wrong. He knew a war would cause great loss of life, so he gave up the idea of war and returned home.
The moral of this story is that we should be content with what we have and not harm others out of a craving for more.
